Bird’s Nest
This morning, when I walked outside to go to work, I noticed a bird’s nest on my porch. If I had not been running late, I would have gone back in the house to get the camera and take a picture. I will do that tonight when I am home.
The nest was not there yesterday, so they built it quickly. I am writing about it because, I don’t know much about birds. I know many are sensitive to human smells and if you touch eggs, babies, the parent won’t come back. I told Evan to get a ladder and see if there are any eggs in it yet.
My concern is this, we have 4 cats that love to sit on the porch. I would HATE to see my cats kill any babies, and I know William would do just that. I know that is nature, and cats kill birds, but if I can move the next to the tree 5 feet away and it would not affect the birds, I think they would have a greater chance of survival.
Anyone got any experience with birds building nests on their front porch? I will take a picture tonight, so you can see where it is at. My favorite part of the nest is that the birds found a popped balloon and used the string in the nest. The popped balloon is hanging down, which is what I noticed first this morning.

that is really cool! i understand your concern though. have you figured out what type of birds they are? is it only certain birds that won’t return if touched by humans? i’m really not sure.

Not quite sure how I stumbled onto these posts of yours, but have quite enjoyed them. My sister had a bird that built a nest on her porch and occupied it for years. New babies every year were so fun to watch. I would leave them be. I’m quite certain your cats could manage to climb nearly any tree you’d move the next to (mine do) and moving the nest might be more perilous for them anyway. The bird that built the nest is certain aware of your cats love of inhabiting the porch….surely she’s built where the cat can’t quite reach. I say leave it be for a while and see how things work out. If you come home and find the babies in particular peril from your cats, then call a local vet and ask advice from him/her. You’ll so enjoy having the birds on your porch - - my sister just loved it!

Thanks Grace! Unfortunately, I never did see any eggs or baby birds in this nest. However, I have found at least half a dozen or so other nests around my property that have been used. there is a nest just above my barn door and I can hear the baby birds chirping every time I go into the barn. The mother bird always flys out the door as soon as you open it to distract/scare you. She typically flys just a few inches above my head and out across the field.
Keep reading along, I love visitors to my blog!
