It’s always Autumn in England

I had a pretty interesting day today at work.  I would assume that most of you know that I work on an all male Adolescent Unit at a mental health hospital.  The lads are all between 16 and 24 years old and have learning disabilities, and mental health problems, and most of them are on a court order (which means they are in hospital, rather than in prison).  Unfortunately I cannot share too many details due to confidentiality of patients..so I will try to keep this informative, but in no way could you find out who it was.

Today, myself and two other members of staff had to stand in a doorway for about an hour, while we tried to calm a patient down.  He had attempted to punch a member of staff 3 times already, but was now laying on a couch and calming down, but still threatening the member of staff.

As he was getting bored, he thought it would be fun to try to find all kinds of things that would get a reaction from us.  The two things he did do was expose himself, and then take a big long wee on the floor.  Eventually we pursuaded him to clean it up and he came out, slighly calmer than he was before.  Needless to say, the whole time all we did was continue to talk to him, and show absoutely no reaction what so ever.  In fact, one of the nurses that was actually doing most of the talking told the patient…’do you really think you are the first person to do something like that?’

I was nearly wetting myself with laughter (pun intended), but I did a good job at keeping a straight face and the patient will never know that I thought it was funny…I guess playing poker all those years with my family and being taught a good ‘poker face’ by my dad finally paid off!

When I signed onto MSN Messenger tonight, I saw the heading in the MSNBC News: South Dakota Approves Abortion Ban.  So I went to the article and here is the link: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/11546410/

While I would consider myself Pro-Life, I am not the sort of person who is out there protesting or taking any such measures against abortion.  I am also not trying to start up a big debate about Pro-life vs. Pro-Choice, but I do think it is interesting when there are so many things that hint to the moral decline of society today, that a decision such as this seems to be getting nearer and nearer.

Recently here in England there has been a lot of coverage on abortions and that there may be a decision soon to move the date of legal abortion back from 24 weeks, to much nearer 12 weeks.  This followed the news of being able to have 3D scans of babies in the womb and more early deliveries of babies at 24 weeks surviving.  (This is one area where advancement in medicine is definately a good thing!)

Stories like this continue to give me hope, that while we may allow more in one area, we are pulled back in another.

Life 11:59 am

For the last 6 months or so, I have been the volunteer Sunday School coordinator at our church.  Mostly this involves me making sure there is someone to teach each week for the 3 classes that we offer; ordering materials; and generally being the person people can complain to and make any decisions that need to be made.

Well, in January I decided to shake things up a bit and organise a musical for the children to perform.  I don’t think that I realised quite what this would entail.  I ordered the materials, and they took much longer to get here than I thought.  This Sunday will be the first week we begin to learn songs, and we have 6 weeks to be ready for our Palm Sunday performance.  So, keep me in mind over the next few weeks as I try to get all the children, ranging from 4 to 12 year olds ready to sing and act in front of the church!  It should be fun!  If you want to check out the musical we are doing, you can find it here: http://www.onewaystreet.com/ShowView/product/1074/41

I will let you know how we get on!

Thanks to Grete, I now have this blog that she expects me to write in!

I have contemplated having my own blog for a while, but because I update my website every couple of weeks, I could not decide how I would work the two to complement each other. Hopefully, in time I will figure out how best to use both the website and this blog. In the meantime, I write on here and even if no one else reads it, it will give me something to do during my evenings and days off. So for now, enjoy!
